Getting started on the internet

The computer

There are a few things you need before you can get connected to the internet. Firstly, you will need a computer. A reasonably modern computer is necessary to be able to cope with the internet. As a good rule of thumb, a computer any older than three years is probably too old. As a minimum, you will need a Pentium 2 with at least 64 megabytes of RAM and a hard disk with 5 gigabytes of space.

You will also need appropriate programs installed on the machine to help you get online.

Modems

A modem is also required for communication between your home computer and the computer that is permanently connected to the internet at your internet service provider (ISP). When a modem connection is made to your ISP you are considered to be online.
ISP account

Your modem can connect you to an ISP, but you need an ISP account first. To get this account, you need to be over 18 and locate an ISP that is suitable to you—look under ‘internet service provider’ in the Yellow Pages. There are many ISPs available, so make sure you consider all the options before you sign up. Some points to consider are:

  • Download limits—there might be a limit on the amount of information that you can take from the internet to put onto your computer. If a limit exists you should make yourself aware of the excess charges for excessive downloads and be careful not to get caught out.
  • Time limits—limits on the time connected to the internet. Find out what the limits are and what the charges are for exceeding the limits.
  • Sign-up costs—some ISP s charge a fee to start your connection. Make sure you are aware of any extra charges.

Dial-up number

It is also an important to note whether the ISP you have selected has a local dial-up phone number. To connect to the internet, your modem dials a number to link to your ISP. That number should start with your local area code. For instance, a Melbourne number should start with (03). This means that the connection to the internet only costs the price of a local call (over and above the internet charges).
