What is Adware?
A software application that displays pop up windows or an advertising banner on your computer’s Internet browser or desktop is called adware. Software developers integrate adware into free applications as a way to generate revenue.
How does it affect me?
Adware monitors and profiles your web usage, and displays targeted advertising based on key words that you type into your Internet browser. This information is sent back to the software developer to on-sell to advertising and marketing companies.
Why is adware unsafe for my family?
- Although not necessarily malicious, adware can be annoying and disruptive to the user
- Adware may contain harmful or offensive images that are unsuitable for children
- It is usually installed onto your computer without your knowledge, or it is included in the fine print of an End User Licence Agreement when you download and install free software
- Adware that is installed without your knowledge can take your personal information to be used for financial gain without your consent.
