How can I Ensure My Children are Safe with Mobile Internet Enabled Devices?

There are a number of Internet safety issues for children common to both fixed and mobile Internet enabled devices.

These can include:

  • Privacy - Knowing why personal information is important and what should or shouldn’t be disclosed online.
  • Netiquette - Sensible online behaviour that children should understand.
  • Law - An understanding of legal issues such as copyright and defamation.
  • Security - Being aware and prepared for security risks such as viruses, pop-up’s and spyware.

Mobile Internet enabled devices differ however from fixed Internet devices in the sense they can be permanently connected to the Internet and available for use anywhere. Because of this, a number of specific Internet safety issues exist.

To address these issues and to help your children stay safe online when they use mobile devices, try the following approaches:

  • Awareness - Make children aware of the Internet safety dangers associated with using mobile devices. Discuss the issues with them.
  • Responsibility - Explain to children what added responsibilities come with using mobile Internet enabled devices.
  • Caution - Teach children to use the devices wisely as the amount of unwanted problems can increase.
  • Technology - Seek out any technology (such as filters) which may help ensure children are not exposed to inappropriate content or can protect children from grooming.
  • Configuration - Make sure you understand the capabilities of the device and how it can connect to the Internet.
  • Security - As you feel appropriate, set up parental passwords on devices and blocks to online services.
  • Research - Keep up-to-date with new technologies and how children are using them.
  • Monitor - Monitor your children's use of the device, by examining bills by ISPs and telecommunications companies and by noting the times of the day the device has been used. Supervise where appropriate.
  • Encourage - Praise your children for acting responsibly and safely when using an Internet enabled device.

Many of these ideas can be included in a family Internet safety contract, or an acceptable usage agreement.

A balanced approach to mobile Internet usage is advised - where all precautions are used to keep children safe, but also where children can enjoy the benefits that these technologies bring.
